Meat the Cook and a Boar

What better to paint for Dave's Paint What You Got challenge than some miniatures sculpted by Dave himself? I got these two minis in 2023, when I ordered the Savage Ogre from Wargames Terrain Workshop. Meat is an orc chef from the Fantasy Wild West range and you can build him holding either some kind of rodent or, if you prefer the vegetarian option, a turnip. A perfect use case for him would be the skirmish game Space Gits, where there's a whole faction of orc chefs, the Grill Cooks.

The boar is a Grice, which is also the name of an extinct breed of swine according to Wikipedia. Maybe I'll put an orc on top of it in the future and use it as a Gore-Grunta, or I'll use it as a wild boar.

Painting both minis was a joy, I used Contrast paints for the basecoat and then built on top of it with regular acrylic paints. There was one annoying moment during painting however, when the Lizard Green Vallejo Xpress Color reactivated after I applied Citadel Coelia Greenshade over it. I thought reactivation was only an issue with Army Painter Speedpaints 1.0, so I was a bit shocked when the paint came off. Fortunately I was able to fix it without too much hassle.

  1. Excellent work on both snapfit, the rodent was sculpted as a giant squirrel to give a large tail for the orc to hold on to, and look forward to seeing you put an orc on the Grice. Weird with the contrast paint, but glad you were able to sort the problem.

    1. Thanks, Dave! Makes sense, a squirrel must be an orcish delicacy 😄

  2. Oo, those look great. The cook (definitely not a chef, though he might have the temperament) has lots of character.

Equally puzzled re the reactivation. So far my Xpress paints have been okay, I'll see if I can replicate your experience.
